TOURISM AMBASSADORS CELEBRATED
27 May 2025
National Volunteer Week is always a great opportunity for CHDC to show gratitude to a dedicated crew of tourism ambassadors.
We kicked off the week with a lunch at Emerald’s Shamali’s Cafe & Restaurant for the team from the Central Queensland Highlands Visitor Information Centre (VIC).
These volunteers generously donate their time to help travellers get the most out of their stay in our region, by arming them with plenty of local information and making them feel welcome.
The lunch doubled as birthday celebration for three of the volunteers – Glen, Jeanette (who turned the big 8-0) and Jean.
Next, CHDC hosted an afternoon tea to thank the Springsure Federation Woolshed. Each of these volunteers are valuable contributors to local tourism – by running this fantastic visitor attraction and its visitor information counter.
We then rounded out the week with a celebration at Duaringa. This event was in honour of the vollies at the town’s Historical and Tourism Centre and the Blackwater International Coal Centre, each of whom play a big role in welcoming visitors to the Central Queensland Highlands.
With tourism development part of CHDC’s mission, we manage the VIC in Emerald and also have ties with visitor services in Duaringa, Blackwater, and Springsure.

Where are you going?
From, where have you come?
The life of a volunteer can be rewarding and fun.
Eyes fixed on doors, people will come.
Hello and Welcome! Your journey and my journey has just begun.
Questions and answers many and few,
We are always ready to listen and answer on cue.
It’s hard to explain the joy that you bring.
Helping each other and that’s a precious thing.
Information is shared and we are filled with pride.
As we show off our countryside…
There are history, mining and precious gems just to name a few.
And more than often the skies are blue.
Friendships are made, that’s what we do
So come on down we’re waiting to welcome you.
– Special thanks to former volunteer Myra Stanton for penning this poem
