THE FUTURE IS GROWING IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS
9 July 2025
We are excited to announce that the updated Central Highlands Agricultural Capability Statement will be published in the coming weeks!
Originally released in 2017, this document highlights just how diverse and productive our region truly is.
To give you a sneak peek, here are a few key highlights showcasing the region’s impressive agricultural strengths:
• Beef: The Central Highlands boasts the highest number of cattle of any local government area in Australia, with an astounding 896,000 head grazing across 4.7 million hectares of pasture.
• Broadacre Cropping: This is the region’s second-largest agricultural activity, contributing between $100 million and $300 million annually in production value, depending on the season.
• Cotton: Cotton stands as the principal irrigated crop, generating between $60 million and $100 million annually. The Central Highlands accounts for approximately 10% of Queensland’s cotton production and 5% of the national total.
• Horticulture: The region is a powerhouse for horticulture, producing over a third of Queensland’s mandarins and table grapes each year.
These highlights are just the beginning. Keep an eye out for the full release of the Central Highlands Agricultural Capability Statement – it will provide valuable insights into the region’s rich agricultural landscape and exciting opportunities ahead.
