ECONOMIC VALUE OF PLAYING HOST
7 August 2024
The Central Highlands is about to play host to another big event for 2024.
Emerald has been selected as the starting point for next week’s Variety Queensland Bash, a high-profile annual fundraiser for children who are sick, disadvantaged or have a disability.
The social value of supporting this charity event is priceless but there’s also a dollar value for our region’s economy.
Bash organisers estimate well over $100,000 will be spent on goods and services by the 300+ participants during their three-day stay in Emerald (note: this money is not part of funds raised).
The 10-day Bash starts from Emerald Showgrounds on 13 August, heads south-west via Springsure, and ends on the Gold Coast.
“The Variety Bash is a celebration of community spirit and our shared commitment to support Queensland kids who need us most,” Variety Fundraising Events Director Erin Lazarou says.
Emerald’s role comes a few months after the town hosted a round of this year’s national kart championship, which saw up 1700 visitors stay (and spend!) in the region for a minimum of four days.
Local businesses can prepare for increased capacity demands that arise when big events are held by regularly checking What’s On Central Queensland Highlands.
Key events in August include Updown Blackdown, Gemfest, Jewel of the Gemfields, Outback Classics Show and Shine, and the Capella Rodeo.
