The Central Highlands is rich in minerals and covers a large portion of the Bowen Basin, which is the largest coal reserve in Australia. Over 100 million tonnes of coal are extracted annually, making it Queensland's most important export commodity. The region also boasts the largest sapphire-producing fields in the Southern Hemisphere.
