Driving growth & empowering business in the Central Highlands

Media Release 30 October 2019 - Top-Notch Agtech Talent

30 October 2019

Nineteen promising students and their teachers have won a special career-building opportunity to attend AgTeCH19.

The Central Highlanders have been selected as Young Tech Bursary recipients, which gives them free registration at the event in Emerald on 6 November.

Students and teachers are provided with invaluable personal introductions to key agtech founders and businesses, interact with expert panel discussions, and join in-field demonstrations of the latest innovations to improve farm and business profitability.

The Bursary program is delivered by the Central Highlands Development Corporation (CHDC) with support from CQUniversity and the Fitzroy Basin Association.

“The agtech industries showcased at AgTeCH19 are dynamic and rapidly growing,” CHDC Agribusiness Development Coordinator Liz Alexander says.

“They are applying innovative farming solutions and exploiting outside technologies which provides attractive, exciting and regionally-based career opportunities.

“While enrolled in Emerald, the students are drawn from across the Central Highlands.

“The interest and skill from applicants was exciting, with many students currently undertaking the Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot Line of Sight) and achieving high results in science and agriculture.

“We are also pleased to welcome some of the final students to graduate from QATC Emerald Agricultural College.”

The student recipients are:
Emerald Marist College (Year 12): Samuel Fischer, Ellen Keene, Hamish Kirby, Jacob Knight, Liam Palmer, Dylan Radloff,  Madison Richter, Adam Riggs, Sam Rose, William Shepherdson.
QTAC Emerald: Savarnah Anderson, Ben Jeffery
Emerald State High School: Peter Jones, Kynan Shields
CQUniversity and Emerald Miss Showgirl: Dakota Davis

Four teachers and instructors have also received complimentary registration.

The Young Tech Bursary Selection Committee’s decision followed an application process, which included written and video submissions from the applicants to demonstrate their career aspirations and interest in the agtech field.

“Growing a team of young, skilled leaders and a strong talent pool is essential to the future of food and fibre,” Mrs Alexander says.

“Going by the great quality of the applications, our region has a strong share of talented and driven young people who are broadening the horizons for agriculture.”
